Problem:

With ROSA Spine, Medtech (now Zimmer Biomet) wanted to share with the world its design for a cranial and spine surgery robot.

This innovative, young company is an expert in medical robotics, and was looking for an ergonomic designer able to pre-industrialize the robot while ensuring compliance with the NFEN60601 medical standard.

The challenges were manifold:
– Imagine a “chameleon” concept adapted to the different needs of cranial and spinal column operations;
– Simplify the work process for the operating team;
– Design all the mechanics to comply with CE medical marking;
– Deliver a prototype ready for CE marking in under 18 months.

Methodology:

We centered the study on the medical team the needs, and we quickly made models available to Medtech so as to co-build the robot architecture. In parallel, our ingeneers analyzed medical standards criterias.

This method made it possible to arrive quickly at an innovative concept that was coherent with the use-based and normative requirements.

Results

The prototype was delivered on time, allowed for CE marking, and opened the door to commercialization. The ROSA Spine was an immediate success in its market and won many awards.

This project was a noteworthy challenge for Medtech and Blanc Tailleur. In fact, it was the first time that we had conceived of a single support robot dedicated to both cranial and spinal surgery using the same robotic base. The ergonomics study lived up to our ambitions and clinical needs. Blanc Tailleur's design immediately won us over. We were certain our customers and users would enthusiastically welcome the new tool. Finally, the first public presentations of the finalized robotic platform were a real success for Medtech, thanks to the partnership with Blanc Tailleur, which played its role all the way till the end of the process.
